The Wall - Crazy Japanese Skate-Bowl Snowboarding

11:47AM Tue, 22nd February 2011

How rad are the Japanese? Seriously, the amount of crazily innovative, different shit they come up with – I mean who else would have thought of making a train that hovers on magnets, or condensing an entire hotel room into a tiny capsule? And even though they have possibly the best naturally-occurring conditions for powder riding anywhere on the planet, that doesn’t stop them getting insanely creative with their park design. Just look at this beast for example – they’ve taken the idea of a concrete bowl skatepark (or an old-school swimming pool) and just transplanted it directly onto the snow. Not only does this lend itself to surf style laybacks and skate-style grinds, it provides possibly the biggest number of different rideable lines ever seen on any obstacle. The potential in this thing is MASSIVE! OK, so the Aesthetikers were thinking along the same lines when they create their ‘taco’ end-section for the Wangl Tangl jam, but really, this is on another level. Let’s see more of this kind of thing in parks over here please!

Tristan first stepped on a snowboard at the age of 12, and (despite being a bit rubbish) has made a point of riding as often as possible since. He joined Whitelines in 2009, and writes, shoots, films and edits for both the magazine and the website. Having headed up the team in charge of the Whitelines Buyers' Guide for the past four seasons knows more about the geeky side of snowboard kit than anyone should ever have to know.
